Relaxed Farming Food: Potato
Click to return to the previous page...
Potatoes can be the cheapest of basic foods (bought by the bag and boiled or roasted) or one of the dearest (just work out how much the potatoes cost when changed into crisps!!). We grow early potatoes for a crop which is usually ready around the beginning of June, and a main crop for later in the year. Our favourite way of preparing the potatoes is to boil them, pop them in the freezer for 20 minutes and then use our 'air fryer' to crisp them up! Delicious!
Our early potatoes (a variety called Accent) have produced a good crop of tubers (the technical name for the potatoes) and this lot are destined for the pan - boiled for 20 minutes, allowed to cool and then mashed with a little butter, rolled into a tube, cut into sections and then popped into the air fryer to crisp off - our own version of a dish called gnocchi!

The potato 'sets' are simply small potatoes from last year's harvest - though these sets from a reputable seed merchant have been checked for diseases and pests. The sets arrive early spring and are popped in the garage for a couple of weeks to chit (grow tiny shoots - you may be able to see them in the photos below). They are then planted 10cm deep in a trench in the soil.
