Fresh eggs, rotten eggs, small eggs, large eggs: ever smelt a rotten egg? The smell is vile. Sometimes if we are sitting on a nest of eggs to incubate (hatch) them, one of the eggs may develop a small crack in it and 'go off'. It's a very good idea for our owners to check eggs that are being incubated like this as if that gone-off egg cracks it will make all the other eggs really smell and the bad bacteria could get into them and kill off the developing chicks.

And do you know how to tell the difference between a fresh egg and a rotten egg? Try putting them in water: a fresh egg will sink and a rotten egg will float.

And we don't always lay perfect eggs, the first eggs we ever lay are quite small but sometimes we lay eggs that are weirdly shaped or even have no yolk...
